ENAudio Overview
THIf you have not worked with AI before, it is easy to form the wrong impression of what it can do.
You see AI write a report in seconds, summarise a document, analyse information or generate a presentation, and it is natural to think:
If AI can do all this, what else can I hand over to it?
That is the right question.
But to answer it properly, you first need to understand what makes AI different from the software companies have been using for decades.
Start with the easy part
AI is very good at helping with work you already understand.
Ask it to summarise a document.
Draft an email.
Compare three proposals.
Extract information from a report.
Rewrite something more clearly.
Translate a piece of text.
Imagine giving AI a 10,000-word report and asking it for the five things the CEO needs to know.
Nobody has written a formula telling it which five sentences to select.
AI reads the material, interprets what appears important and produces a summary.
You can then look at those five points and decide whether they capture what actually matters.
That is a useful first picture of AI:
The summary.
These tasks can save a great deal of time because you already know roughly what a good answer should look like.
If the summary misses something important, you can see it.
If the email sounds wrong, you can rewrite it.
If the comparison leaves out something obvious, you can spot it.
In these situations, AI can do much of the execution while you judge the result.
That is probably the easiest place to understand its value.
But it is only the beginning.
AI can also work where traditional software struggles
Traditional software works best when someone can define the rules in advance.
Think of a spreadsheet.
Put 100 in column A and 50 in column B. Tell the spreadsheet to add them, and column C gives you 150.
Run that formula across 100,000 rows and the rule does not change.
That is traditional software:
The formula.
You define the logic.
The software executes it.
This is why conventional software is so powerful for calculations, transactions and processes where the rules can be clearly specified in advance.
AI is different because it does not always need every rule to be written down first.
It can interpret.
Suppose a company has financial data from several subsidiaries.
One subsidiary records a supplier as:
ABC Holdings
Another uses:
ABC Hldgs
Another writes:
A.B.C. Holdings Ltd
Traditional software can easily match records that are identical.
But once the names start to vary, someone usually has to define additional rules.
Ignore punctuation.
Ignore spaces.
Recognise common abbreviations.
Treat certain words as equivalent.
AI can go further.
It can look at the information and infer that several differently written entries probably refer to the same company.
That ability to interpret is one of the reasons AI is so powerful.
It allows machines to work with language, documents and messy information that could never practically be reduced to a complete set of rules.
AI can work across more information than a person can
There is another important advantage.
Scale.
A person might comfortably review twenty records.
Perhaps two hundred.
They cannot carefully compare hundreds of thousands of records in their head and continuously look for relationships between them.
AI can work across far larger amounts of information.
It can classify, compare, recognise patterns and make inferences repeatedly without becoming physically tired or losing concentration in the way a person does.
This opens up possibilities that were previously impractical.
A small team can review far more documents.
An analyst can explore far more data.
A manager can ask questions across a much larger body of information.
One person can potentially accomplish work that previously required many people.
This is where AI begins to look extraordinary.
But this is also where an important problem appears.
AI will often give you an answer
Imagine the same financial-data problem.
Perhaps 80% of the records are easy to match.
The names are identical or close enough that the rules are obvious.
Then another group requires interpretation.
The AI notices that punctuation can be ignored.
Then it notices abbreviations.
Then it finds other patterns.
Each new interpretation allows it to classify more records.
Eventually it may give you a complete answer.
That answer could be 99% correct.
It might even be 100% correct.
But there is a difference between receiving an answer and understanding why that answer is correct.
AI may have made several assumptions along the way.
One assumption may have been built on another.
If something is wrong in the final result, you may not immediately know which assumption caused the problem or how many other records were affected by the same reasoning.
This is very different from asking AI to draft an email.
You can read an email in thirty seconds and decide whether it works.
You cannot inspect hundreds of thousands of records in the same way.
The AI has solved the capacity problem.
It has not automatically solved the trust problem.
This is where the human role changes
This does not mean AI cannot be used for difficult work.
It means the nature of the human contribution changes.
If you already understand the logic and know what a correct result looks like, AI can perform enormous amounts of execution for you.
You can define the steps.
AI can apply them at scale.
You can test the results at each stage.
That can save an extraordinary amount of work.
But when AI is also being asked to determine the logic itself, something else is happening.
You are no longer only delegating execution.
You are also delegating part of the reasoning.
AI can do that.
It can infer.
It can analyse.
It can recognise patterns that you may not have seen yourself.
But the further that reasoning moves beyond what you understand or can verify, the more difficult it becomes to know whether the final answer deserves to be trusted.
And that brings us to the third picture:
The signature.
Imagine those five AI-generated takeaways from the 10,000-word report are going into tomorrow's board paper.
Someone still has to look at them and say:
Yes. These really are the five things the board needs to know, and I am prepared to put my name behind them.
That is the human contribution.
Experience.
Context.
Judgment.
Taste.
And ultimately, responsibility for whether the result is fit to use.
Working with AI can feel like working with a colleague
This is another reason AI can be confusing at first.
Using AI often feels much more like working with another person than using conventional software.
You can give it an objective rather than a complete set of instructions.
You can explain the context.
You can ask it to think through a problem.
You can challenge its answer.
You can ask it to try again.
You can even ask it to propose an approach you had not considered.
That is much closer to working with a capable colleague than entering instructions into software.
But there is a fundamental difference.
A colleague can take responsibility for their part of the work.
They can explain what they did.
You can challenge their reasoning.
They can defend it.
They can learn from a mistake.
Their professional reputation, role and consequences are connected to the quality of their work.
AI can produce the work.
It cannot own the work.
If the result is wrong, there is no AI colleague underneath you who is responsible for the mistake.
The responsibility remains with the person or organisation using the result.
So what can AI actually do for you?
A useful way to think about it is in three levels.
First, AI can help you do work you already understand.
Writing, summarising, comparing, researching, extracting and organising.
The benefit is mostly speed.
Second, AI can help you work across information that would otherwise be too large or too complicated to handle manually.
Documents, datasets, classifications, patterns and relationships.
The benefit is increased capacity.
Third, AI can help interpret problems where the rules are not fully known in advance.
It can infer, reason and propose answers.
This is where AI becomes most powerful.
It is also where the need for human understanding becomes greatest.
The more easily you can recognise whether the result is right, the more confidently you can hand work to AI.
The harder the result is to verify, the more important it becomes to understand the logic being used.
Three things to remember
If you remember nothing else, remember these three pictures.
The formula.
Traditional software follows logic that someone has already defined.
The summary.
AI can interpret information and work out what appears to matter without being given every rule.
The signature.
A human still decides whether the result is something the organisation is prepared to rely on.
That is the difference.
AI can execute.
It can interpret.
It can reason.
It can work across more information than a person could ever process manually.
It can even surface things you did not know to look for.
But it cannot take responsibility for whether the final result makes sense.
So the question to take back to your enterprise is not simply:
Can AI do this?
Increasingly, the answer will be yes.
A more useful question is:
What am I asking AI to do - and do I still understand the result well enough to put my name behind it?
Understanding this is the foundation for using AI well in an enterprise. Before any AI initiative moves forward, the people responsible for it should be able to answer three questions clearly: What are we asking AI to do? How will we know whether its answer is good enough? And where does human judgment and responsibility still sit?
ABC Holdings
ABC Hldgs
A.B.C. Holdings Ltd
