Agent Wars! -What Happens When AI Agents Become the Customer Interface?

Nathaniel Whittemore / The AI Daily Brief · 2026-09-22.September 22, 2026
Watch: 9:33–30:35 min.

General-purpose AI agents are beginning to challenge the digital platforms they increasingly act through on users’ behalf. Retail provides a useful example: platforms may initially resist external agents that threaten their control of the customer relationship, but as agents become an important source of demand, the relationship may shift toward negotiated access, data sharing, commercial terms, and selective partnerships. For knowledge workers, the useful point is to watch how organisations adapt when AI becomes a new intermediary layer—because future advantage may depend less on blocking agents and more on deciding which agents to work with, what access to give them, and how value is shared.

  • AI agents could become a new aggregation layer above existing platforms. A personal agent that understands the user’s preferences and context can compare multiple services and choose between them, potentially turning today’s platforms into suppliers behind the agent interface.
  • The central conflict is over who controls the customer relationship. Platforms want users to remain inside their own interface, while horizontal agents could increasingly make decisions and transact on the user’s behalf.
  • Existing business models can give platforms strong reasons to resist agents. The episode highlights Amazon’s advertising economics: agents may make purchasing more efficient, but they bypass the browsing and advertising experience that generates significant value for the platform.
  • Platforms are already choosing different strategies. Amazon blocked Muse, while Shopify opened its platform through direct support and agentic checkout, illustrating the emerging choice between resisting agents and making it easier for them to bring demand.
  • It is still unclear how much shopping people actually want to delegate. The episode questions whether agentic shopping will become the dominant use case, because discovery and browsing are themselves part of the value of some purchases.
